The Team Behind Public Records is Opening a New Venue in Sunset Park

After six years of hosting some of the city’s best systems and live music programming, the good, aurally-driven folks that brought us Public Records are readying their next chapter.
On Thursday, December 4, the Gowanus compound announced Public Studios, a recently formed creative and design firm from PR founders Shane Davis and Francis Harris, would be at the helm of a new venue and event space at the MADE Bush Terminal along the Sunset Park waterfront. Davis and Harris are partnering with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) on their new venture, according to the announcement, and some of the key players who helped make the Public Records sound possible (NNNN and Devin Turnbull of Ojas) will be returning to work on the system and speakers, with Arup consulting on the acousitics, in the still unnamed new space. But don’t expect a verbatim rebuild of its sister venue to the north of the borough—the 1,000-person capacity space will be its own thing entirely. “There will never be another Public Records,” Davis told Dezeen. “But we’re interested in building other projects that are ambitious and challenging,” he added, noting “there was a lot of intrigue and excitement about engaging with this similarly historic building.”
The design of the venue itself will reportedly be handled by DUMBO-based studio nArchitects, which is also working on the EDC’s broader masterplan for the MADE Bush Terminal, comprehensively restoring and converting the site’s network of warehouses into studios, offices, and creative suites. That plan also includes a new five-acre park by the pier.
It’s unclear when the space will open, but it’s slated to break ground in the “next couple of months,” eyeing a 2026 debut.
